Eleanor Claire Johnson has been the laboratory's artistic director since its founding.
All of Emmatroupe's theatre, film and video projects bear witness to the role of the artist in society, and explore the process of grief and transformation in the face of traumas that feel overwhelming. Over three decades the laboratory has evolved into a Theatre of Life.

The archive
The Emmatroupe Archives run from 1976 to the present and remain in New York City. All projects are documented on film, video, audio, still images and text.
The laboratory has been funded across these decades by the private sector. Emmatroupe continues the process of digitally translating the work and history of the theatre laboratory, and in due time all of it will be available on the web.
